South Kensington Removals Health and Safety Policy
South Kensington Removals is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and associated services. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks, promoting best practice and complying with relevant health and safety legislation applicable to moving, handling and transport activities.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental impact arising from our operations. We will provide and maintain safe working conditions, safe systems of work, and adequate information, training and supervision for all staff engaged in removals, packing, loading, transport and storage activities.
Health and safety is a core management responsibility and a shared duty across the company. Every employee and contractor is expected to work safely and to take reasonable care of their own wellbeing and that of others.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at South Kensington Removals is responsible for implementing and reviewing this policy, ensuring that adequate resources are provided for health and safety, and that our procedures remain suitable and effective. Managers will:
Identify and assess risks associated with our removal services, vehicles, equipment and premises.
Develop safe systems of work for tasks such as lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, stacking and securing items.
Provide appropriate equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment that are fit for purpose and properly maintained.
Ensure that employees receive appropriate induction, ongoing training and supervision for their roles.
Monitor performance, investigate accidents and near misses, and act on findings to improve safety.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees of South Kensington Removals have a duty to safeguard their own health and safety and that of others affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all health and safety procedures, safe working practices and instructions.
Use vehicles, tools, lifting aids and protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
Cooperate with managers and supervisors on all health and safety matters.
Report hazards, near misses, accidents and incidents without delay.
Not misuse or interfere with anything provided for health, safety or welfare.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
South Kensington Removals will carry out regular and task-specific risk assessments for activities including packing, dismantling and reassembling furniture, handling fragile or heavy items, operating lifting equipment, driving and parking vehicles and working in customer premises, communal areas and public spaces.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to implement safe systems of work and to provide clear instructions to staff. Where necessary, site-specific assessments will be conducted prior to or at the start of a removal job to identify access issues, parking constraints, stair and lift conditions, floor surfaces and other relevant hazards.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant part of our work and presents a risk of injury if not properly controlled. South Kensington Removals will:
Provide training in correct manual handling techniques tailored to removal work.
Use appropriate handling aids where reasonably practicable, such as trolleys, dollies, straps, sliders and lifting devices.
Plan work to minimise excessive lifting, awkward postures and repetitive movements.
Assess heavy, bulky or awkward items and ensure sufficient personnel and equipment are used to move them safely.
All equipment will be inspected, maintained and used only by trained staff in accordance with manufacturer guidance and company procedures.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are an essential part of our service and must be operated safely at all times. South Kensington Removals will ensure that:
Vehicles are regularly inspected, maintained and kept roadworthy.
Drivers are competent, properly licensed and receive appropriate training, including load securing and safe driving techniques.
Loads are packed and secured to prevent movement, damage or risk to occupants and other road users.
Drivers comply with traffic regulations, parking requirements and any site-specific rules at customer locations.
Customer and Public Safety
We recognise our duty to protect customers, visitors, neighbours and members of the public who may be affected by our work. To minimise risks, South Kensington Removals will:
Plan access routes to avoid unnecessary obstruction and trip hazards.
Use warning signs or verbal communication where necessary when moving large items through communal or public spaces.
Keep work areas as tidy as reasonably practicable, managing packaging, tools and waste.
Operate respectfully and carefully within customer homes and workplaces, paying attention to fire exits, emergency routes and building-specific safety requirements.
Training, Information and Supervision
Appropriate health and safety training will be provided for all staff, proportionate to their role and level of responsibility. This may include induction training, manual handling, safe use of equipment, driving standards, site awareness and emergency procedures.
Supervisors will ensure that new or inexperienced staff are adequately supported and that all employees understand the risks involved in their tasks and how to control them.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
South Kensington Removals is committed to learning from accidents, incidents and near misses. All events will be recorded and, where necessary, investigated to establish root causes and implement preventive measures. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with any investigation and to provide accurate information.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We encourage open communication on health and safety matters and welcome suggestions from employees and customers on how we can improve. Health and safety performance will be regularly reviewed, and this policy updated where necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice and the nature of our removals operations.
Policy Review and Approval
This Health and Safety policy is approved by the management of South Kensington Removals and will be reviewed at least annually, or sooner if significant changes occur in legislation, our activities or identified risks. The latest version of this policy will be made available to employees and to customers on request.
